There is action to be enjoyed in breathtaking spots all over Japan, but there is only one place where you can ride a slide while taking in views of an ocean covered in drift ice. That place is the “Drift Ice Spectacle Slider”, Abashiri's famous wintertime event. Until 2015, the event had been held on the icebound Abashiri Lake under the title “Warm Abashiri: Discover the New Northern World!”. But it has now been given a new name and relocated to the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum (Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum) and Mount Tento Lookout, which opened to visitors that year.
As the name suggests, the highlight of the Drift Ice Spectacle Slider event is the thirty-meter ice slide and the hundred-meter tube bobsled slide, which both overlook the drift ice on the Okhotsk Sea. The view from the summit of Mount Tento, the starting point, is said to be so beautiful you feel you have been transported to heaven. In fact, it is such a stunning spectacle that is has been nationally designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty.
And don't miss the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, which reopened to visitors in August last year. Inside, experience for yourself the drift ice environment in freezing temperatures of -15°C on the Drift Ice Experience Terrace. Visitors can even touch actual pieces of drift ice that are on permanent display here. And there is plenty more to see besides, including projection mapping on a wall installation shaped to resemble drift ice, and the Drift Ice Vision Theater which shows vistas filmed in 4K resolution. So how about checking out the Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum after your ride on the Drift Ice Spectacle Slider?
