Sounkyo Onsen is a village in Daisetsuzan National Park, the biggest national park in Japan. Every year, this hot spring village, which is nestled between the sheer walls of an immense gorge, gets lit up in spectacular style for the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival. Visit here in wintertime — when it is so cold here that even the waterfall freezes into an “ice fall” — to enjoy a truly wondrous world of ice, where an area of about 10,000 meters squared is filled with monuments and sculptures crafted from ice, and illuminated in a dazzling array of colors.
And there is more on offer than just ice sculptures: in igloo-shaped ice domes, visitors can offer a donation and pray for happiness at the ice shrine, they can slip down a long ice slide in a tire tube, or they can have a drink at the Northern Ice Bar. The Northern Ice Bar is particularly popular for its hot drinks — including sweet red bean soup and original sake lees cocoa — that are a big hit with kids too.
Don't miss weekends at the Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival, when the sky blooms with spectacular fireworks in the “Feast of Fire” fireworks display. The best spot for viewing the display is the observation deck, with its panoramic views over the entire venue, but nearby hotels also offer magnificent views. Join the approximately 150,000 tourists who experience the world of ice and light that is Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival every year, and witness a spectacle that you will never forget.
