Sea lions are always a favorite at aquariums, but to fisherman in Hokkaido, sea lions are a “gang in the sea” - or a pest that take fish caught in fishing nets and destroy fishing equipment. However, due to their dwindling numbers around the world, sea lions are now a species that should be protected. So, in order to show visitors the real situation, actual fishermen conduct a tour called “Shiretoko Sea Creatures”.
As a small boat is used to travel across the river on the tour, you can come within just a few meters of a sea lion. The sight and intimidating howl of the largest type of sea lion in excess of 3 meters in length and one ton in weight is an impressive experience.
The best time to meet sea lions is in the cold season from December through January after the salmon net fishing finishes in the fall. The further the boat travels, the more chance there is to encounter sea lions. In addition, at the end of January, visitors can observe Rausu sea urchins fishing in extremely cold waters where even drift ice can appear. Why not enjoy the unique scenery of the town of Rausu, the “downtown” of the “Fish Castle”, and come into contact with wild creatures in a world heritage ocean not seen in aquariums?
