The frost flower is a blossom that is said to bloom only in the wintertime. And even then, only particularly cold conditions will do: it only blooms in freezing temperatures of -15℃ or less. What's more, it only blooms in the morning, and when there is not much wind. Frost flowers are truly miraculous flowers that only bloom when these three conditions are met.
An exquisite natural phenomenon, they are formed by vapor crystallizing atop frozen lakes, giving the appearance of flowers. You might think it would take a lot of luck to witness such a rare phenomenon, but there are actually a few places in Japan where all the conditions are met, and one of them is in East Hokkaido.
That place is the Lake Akan and Lake Kussharo area.
Lake Akan is the best spot for viewing frost flowers: it has the perfect environmental and climatic conditions, and the phenomenon, which is normally only visible in December and January, can still be witnessed here all the way through to early March. Visitors can take a guided walking tour over the surface of the frozen lake to observe the frost flowers. In wintertime, as if by magic, the ice bound lake transforms overnight into a meadow of white blossoms. Why not come and take a look for yourself?
