See ice art on a mysterious lake

One of the three most mysterious lakes in Hokkaido is Lake Onneto in Akan National Park. It is famous for its “changing five colors” as the lake gradually changes to emerald green, dark blue and cobalt blue depending on the time of day and place. Beautiful ice ripples also appear on the surface of this mysterious lake when it freezes.

The frozen lake surface is a work of art for a limited time

A diverse array of “ice art” appears on Lake Onneto in the form of frozen air pockets, and sections so smooth, it looks like a mirror. In other sections, white cracks sometimes appear in the ice that look like white dragon is swimming. This is called the “dragon God” by some people.

The best time to see the frozen Lake Onneto is from around the end of November until the beginning of December. The lake is not accessible by car in the winter as roads are closed. Visitors can trek to the lake wearing snow shoes. In fact, trekking through steep snow trails makes this magnificent scenery even more special. Why not see this art that looks like gem stones on a lake surface this winter?
