The farther away you are from the city, the more beautiful the stars become. When you gaze at the sky, the less obstructions the better. And the clear air of winter is the best for star watching. Hokkaido's Lake Mashu provides all of these advantages in a big way. Mashu Observation Deck 1 and 3 look out on Lake Mashu and are located above the mountains that surround the city of Teshikaga. This gives you a view unobstructed by any tall mountains and allows you to enjoy an almost 360 degree view.
For people who are a bit nervous about driving at night or who feel a bit uneasy on an unfamiliar route, there is also bus tour from the Kawayu Hot Springs to the Mashu Observation Deck called "The Lake Mashu Star Journey" in which passengers can enjoy gazing at the night sky. After departing from your place of stay, the Starry Sky Guide gives careful guidance on everything from the conditions of the sky on that particular night to the night sky elements visible from Lake Mashu and even the stars visible for that season. The Starry Sky Guide uses a laser pointer while talking to make it easy for everyone to follow along.
Lake Mashu sparkling with faint starlight. A night view that lets you see all the way to far away Kushiro. The 360 degree panoramic starry sky. If you are lucky, you can even see a falling star or an artificial satellite. Everyone should see this amazing Hokkaido starry sky at least once.
